The Developer Story

Behind the Build

Every page of this platform was crafted by one batchmate — an engineer who kept learning. This is how continuous learning, Udemy courses, and AI-augmented workflows built a digital home for Batch 2001.

In 2001, a class of civil engineers walked out of WMSU with T-squares in their instincts and structures in their future. Twenty-five years later, one of them sat down to build something different — not of concrete and steel, but of HTML, Apps Script, and heart. This platform — every calculator, every gallery, every pin on the world map — is proof that an engineer's education never really ends.

Engr. Vim Coper C. Gonzales

Civil Engineer II · Al-Jazirah Engineers and Consultants, Saudi Arabia
Technology Chair, WMSU CE Batch 2001 · Dammam, Eastern Province

By day, he is a seasoned civil engineer with 20+ years in power infrastructure — consultant for the construction of power substations, underground cables, and transmission lines with capacities up to 380 kV, reviewing designs, directing site quality, and mentoring junior engineers across Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province.

By night — and on countless weekends — he taught himself the modern web stack and built this entire Silver Jubilee platform solo: frontend, backend, email systems, admin consoles, and a 19-tool engineering suite.

"Not because he had to, but because the batch deserved a digital home built by one of its own."

The Learning Journey

sharpened on Udemy

There was no computer science degree behind this website — there was a study habit. Course by course on Udemy, category by category, a structural engineer retooled himself: first the fundamentals of web development and CSS, then design, then Google Drive and Workspace productivity (the discovery that a spreadsheet could be a database changed everything), and finally AI-powered workflows — the multiplier that turned one developer into a whole team.

    Engineering First

BS Civil Engineering, WMSU — graduated March 29, 2001, later adding master’s units in Structural and Environmental Engineering. The discipline that underpins everything here: load paths and logic, codes and checking your work. An engineer's habit of verifying every number would later become this platform's test-everything culture.

  2. Udemy Chapter I

    Web Development & CSS Foundations

The first Udemy courses: HTML structure, CSS layout, the box model, responsive design. What began as curiosity — "could I build the batch a simple page?" — became fluency. The premium navy-silver-gold design language across this site grew from those CSS fundamentals.

  3. Udemy Chapter II

Productivity & the Google Drive Revelation

Courses on Google Drive and Workspace productivity unlocked the platform's secret architecture: Google Sheets as the database, Apps Script as the free backend, Drive as the photo CMS. Zero hosting costs for the backend — an engineer's economy applied to software.

  4. Udemy Chapter III

Design, WordPress & the Craft of Polish

Design-focused learning brought typography, color systems, and micro-interactions; WordPress and Divi exploration connected the static site to a full CMS with login, courses, and member dashboards. The lesson: engineering makes it work — design makes people want to use it.

  5. Udemy Chapter IV

    AI-Powered Workflows

Courses on AI-powered creation reframed what one person could ship. AI became a pair-programmer, a test writer, a design reviewer — with the engineer always as the checker of record. Every AI-assisted formula on this platform was verified against hand calculations before deployment.

The AI-Augmented Workflow

innovation story

This platform was built with an approach most alumni sites never see: AI as an accelerator, the engineer as the authority. It's the same relationship a structural engineer has with analysis software — the tool computes fast; the engineer decides what's true.

Acceleration

AI pair-programming compressed months of development into weeks — scaffolding pages, drafting Apps Script endpoints, and iterating designs at conversation speed.

Verification culture

Every calculator was tested against hand calculations; every page passed automated structure and behavior checks. 147 passing tests guard the engineering suite alone.

Automation

Email lifecycles, upload moderation, credential generation, and audit logging run themselves through Apps Script — AI helped design the workflows, automation keeps them alive.

Design elevation

AI-assisted design exploration made the glassmorphism tools dashboard, print-ready calc sheets, and interaction diagrams possible for a team of one.

The Flagship Project

portfolio

WMSU CE Batch 2001 Silver Jubilee Platform

A complete alumni ecosystem: static-frontend speed, Google-powered backend economics, WordPress member services, and engineering tools no other alumni association has.

Alumni Registration & Directory

Five-step wizard, verified profiles, public directory with search and filters, WordPress sync with HMAC-signed APIs.

Engineering Tools Suite

19 calculators across 6 material frameworks with live diagrams, PNG export, and print-ready calc sheets — every formula hand-verified.

Global Maps

Alumni across ~50 countries and a Project Impact Map pinning the batch's built legacy, on Leaflet with custom category pins.

Drive-Powered Gallery

Google Drive as the CMS: folders become albums, descriptions become captions, uploads flow through a moderation queue.

Admin Control Center

Role-based access, audit-logged operations, article workflow, awards console with blind scoring, finance lifecycle emails.

AI Career Assistant

An Anthropic-powered assistant with graceful offline fallback — plus AI-drafted articles flagged for human confirmation.

Built with passion, learning, and AI — for the batch that built me first.
